It is always a good idea to call 811 first so that you can identify any public utility that may be near your dig site before you call for private locates. Plan ahead and call 811 a minimum of three days before digging. This will help explain the steps for marking your site, the utilities covered by 811, and provide instructions for checking the status of your locate request. Private utility lines are the ones you own and are responsible for maintaining. They are, for the most part, on your property which is why they are defined as "private utilities". A public utility will mark their facilities if they run within your property lines.
